Week 7 of Salmon Season
And hello from Alaska! We have just entered our seventh week of salmon season. It's not quite fall in Alaska, but fall is certainly peeking around the corner! The sun is setting well before 10 p.m., we're having a few big, powerful storms roll down the pipeline, and the coho salmon are beginning to thicken up with beautiful, slick scales.
Similar to previous years, fishing has slowed down a lot in the last week or two. It's quite common to have a "peak" of coho fishing in mid July, followed by a steady decline in late July + early August, and then a second peak in mid to late August. It's always difficult to hang tough (and patient) when the fish are off the bite... But it generally it always turns back around!
That said... I (Jess) am sending this off from the comfort of Caleb's folk's cabin, while the rest of Team Fairweather (Caleb + crew) are out doing some big time exploring, hoping to find the next hot coho salmon bite! It's tough to know when to hold tight, and wait patiently for the fish to arrive... And when to stack that gear on the deck, batten down the hatches, and make a big move in search of bountiful waters.
We opted to head searching! For our sanity: we'd rather search and strike out, than wait around for fish to show. And as a little mid-season treat to Monti and I, we opted to visit grandma and let the kids (the human one, and the four legged one) stretch their legs on solid land for a little bit. If we're being honest, I needed the break too. 🙃
Plus, just when I thought the boys would surely starve to death without me around... I received pictures of steak and fresh pie! Turns out they're doing just fine.
I hope you'll forgive us: whether this big move pans out or not, we won't likely share much about it on our emails. There's a handful of fellow fishermen on our email list, and for better or worse; we do have to keep a few details of our comings and goings to ourselves. 😉
With gratitude,
Jess, Caleb, & Monti
